RSA takes action against shoreline litter

RSA Shoreline Cleanup team

Every year, tens of thousands of Canadians take action against shoreline litter by participating in The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. For the last three years, RSA employees from coast to coast have dedicated a week in June to pick up waste as part of this initiative - all in an effort to ensure we have healthy shorelines for our communities and the wildlife that depend on these habitats.

“As a business, we don’t exist in isolation,” says Donna Ince, RSA’s head of Personal Insurance. “We’re there for our customers, brokers and people who live and work in the communities around us, supporting them at difficult moments and getting involved in causes they care about such as protecting the environment.”

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is a conservation initiative between WWF and Ocean Wise, and is one of the largest direct action environmental programs in Canada. The program began in 1994 starting out with just a small number of participants who were interested in cleaning their shores, and since then has grown to support hundreds of thousands of Canadians to remove more than 1 million kg of shoreline litter.

As part of our ongoing partnership with WWF-Canada, we participate in programs like the Shoreline Cleanup. In 2018, RSA had a total of 311 employees who took part in the cleanup and collected nearly 500kg of waste. For 2019, RSA reached a record number of participants. More than 370 employees across 11 RSA offices in Canada collected 266kg of waste ! This year, the teams put a larger emphasis on raising awareness about the small pieces of plastics that make their way into our waterways and pose a risk to people and marine life. Did you know? If the rate of plastic production and consumption does not change, by the year 2050, we can expect to have more plastic in the ocean than there will be fish!

Active in Communities
The Shoreline Cleanup is our biggest volunteer event of the year and a big part of RSA’s 'Confident Futures' corporate responsibility strategy. Whether it’s promoting social mobility, encouraging employee volunteering or supporting local causes, we strive to make a positive difference to the people around us.

As a best-in-class insurer, we believe our role shouldn't start with a policy and end with a claim. Every choice we make as a business matters. Our Confident Futures strategy sets out how we integrate responsible business practices into our everyday operations and our ambition to create a future in which people can be more confident in managing the risks they face. In addition to working with our communities to make a positive difference, we are also developing partnerships that help us to 'Shape a smarter tomorrow' by raising awareness and improving mitigation of every day risks such as road safety and impacts of extreme weather.
